Hannah Waddingham has won the hearts of audiences with her brilliant acting, incredible singing voice and down-to-earth personality. Many people know her as Rebecca Welton from Ted Lasso, while others remember her as the unforgettable Septa Unella in Game of Thrones. But her success did not happen overnight. She spent years working in London’s West End before becoming a familiar face on television and in films. Away from the spotlight, fans are curious about her age, height, partner, daughter and life beyond acting. In this article, we explore her early years, career highlights and latest projects in 2026.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Born in London on 28 July 1974, the British actress grew up in a family with strong links to music. Her mother, Melodie Kelly, was an opera singer. This family background introduced her to the world of performance from an early age. She developed an interest in singing and acting while growing up. These early influences helped her understand the effort needed to build a career in entertainment. They also gave her a strong base for the demanding work that would follow.
Before becoming a familiar face on television, she spent years working in theatre. Live performances helped her develop her voice, confidence and acting skills. Theatre also taught her how to connect with an audience and keep a performance engaging. Unlike filming, stage work requires actors to deliver their lines and songs without repeated takes. This experience helped her become a confident performer. It also prepared her for the wide range of roles she would take on later.
Her early career included productions such as The Beautiful Game, Spamalot and A Little Night Music. These shows allowed her to demonstrate both her singing ability and her talent for acting. She also earned recognition through Olivier Award nominations. Although she was gaining respect in theatre, wider television fame took longer to arrive. Her story shows that success does not always happen overnight. Years of practice and smaller opportunities can help prepare a performer for a major breakthrough.
From West End Theatre to Game of Thrones
The West End played an important part in her rise as a performer. Musical theatre gave her the chance to play different characters and work across comedy and drama. She also gained experience performing demanding songs in front of live audiences. Her height, expressive face and deep voice helped her stand out on stage. However, her success came from more than her appearance. Strong acting skills, comic timing and years of practice helped her build a lasting career.
A major turning point arrived in 2015 when she appeared in Game of Thrones as Septa Unella. The character was a strict religious figure involved in some of the show’s darkest scenes. Her serious expression and powerful delivery made the role memorable. Even when she had little dialogue, she could create tension through her presence. The series introduced her to viewers around the world. It also showed that she could handle challenging dramatic roles alongside her theatre work.
The experience opened doors to further television opportunities. It also gave audiences a chance to discover her other performances. Septa Unella was very different from the lively and emotional characters she would later play. That contrast showed her ability to adapt to different stories. Rather than being known for one type of role, she continued exploring comedy, drama, fantasy and musical projects. Her work on the fantasy series remains an important part of her career.
Ted Lasso and Her Most Popular Television Roles
For many viewers, Rebecca Welton is the character that made her a household name. In Ted Lasso, Rebecca owns AFC Richmond, a fictional English football club. At first, she appears determined to damage the team for personal reasons. As the story develops, viewers discover more about her past, feelings and hopes for the future. The character combines sharp humour with moments of real sadness. This balance makes Rebecca more than a typical television businesswoman.
Her performance received widespread praise and earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 2021. She brought strength and vulnerability to the role. Rebecca can be confident in one scene and uncertain in the next. This makes her feel like a real person rather than a simple comedy character. The role also allowed the actress to show her natural humour and emotional range. It helped introduce her work to viewers who may not have watched her earlier theatre performances.
Her television career includes several other projects. She played Sofia Marchetti in Sex Education and appeared in the science-fiction series Krypton. She also voices Deliria in the animated comedy Krapopolis. Voice acting allows performers to create characters through sound alone, and her strong voice suits this kind of work. In 2026, she returned as Rebecca for the fourth season of Ted Lasso. The new season follows Ted as he takes on the challenge of coaching a women’s football team. The season finale aired on 7 October 2026. Apple TV confirmed her return as part of the main cast. citeturn582998search1turn582998news15
