Stephen Graham is one of those actors whose performances can stay with you long after the credits roll. Over the years, he has taken on everything from troubled characters to complex family men, bringing a sense of realism to each role. Audiences may know him from This Is England, Peaky Blinders, A Thousand Blows and Adolescence, while his film work has also earned widespread attention. Beyond the screen, his life with actress Hannah Walters and their family has often sparked interest, although they keep much of their personal life private. With more projects ahead, Graham continues to take on demanding roles and tell stories that connect with viewers.
Biography, Age and Early Life
Stephen Graham was born on 3 August 1973 in Kirkby, Lancashire, close to Liverpool. His northern upbringing later became an important part of his identity as a performer, particularly through his natural Scouse accent and understanding of working-class environments. He developed an interest in acting early and went on to study at Rose Bruford College. His early training helped provide the foundation for a career that would eventually cover film, television, writing and producing.
One of his early breakthrough appearances came in Snatch, Guy Ritchie’s 2000 crime comedy. He played Tommy in the fast-moving ensemble film, which introduced him to a much wider audience. He subsequently appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York, working alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis. These early roles demonstrated that he could move successfully from British productions into major international films.
A major career milestone came with This Is England, where he played Andrew “Combo” Gascoigne. The character allowed him to explore themes including violence, racism, insecurity and social identity. He returned to the role in This Is England ’86, This Is England ’88 and This Is England ’90. His later film credits included Public Enemies, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Rocketman and The Irishman, while he also earned an OBE for services to drama in 2023.
Height, Ethnicity and Accent
Searches for Stephen Graham height produce slightly different measurements depending on the source. IMDb has listed him at approximately 5 ft 4½ in, while a recent Times profile gives his height as 5 ft 5 in. The difference is relatively small, so describing him as around 5 ft 4½ in to 5 ft 5 in is more sensible than treating one online measurement as completely definitive.
His physical height has never been the main source of his screen presence. He frequently uses posture, facial expressions, movement and vocal delivery to make characters appear powerful, vulnerable or threatening. This can be seen across roles that range from criminals and police officers to fathers, chefs and historical figures. His performances often rely on subtle physical changes rather than simply changing costumes or hairstyles.
His mixed-race heritage is another subject frequently searched by audiences. Public profiles have described him as mixed race, with reports identifying Jamaican and Swedish heritage on his biological father’s side. He has also spoken about experiencing racism while growing up. His natural voice is strongly Scouse, although he has demonstrated considerable versatility by using different accents, including an American accent for Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire.
Wife, Family and Personal Life
His wife, Hannah Walters, is an actress and producer with her own extensive screen career. The couple met while studying at Rose Bruford College and married in 2008. They have two children and have maintained a close personal and professional partnership for many years. Walters has appeared in several productions connected with the actor’s wider career and has become an important creative collaborator.
The couple co-founded Matriarch Productions in 2020, expanding their professional work beyond acting. The company has been involved with projects including Boiling Point and Adolescence. Through the production company, they have been able to develop stories and support talent that may not always receive opportunities through traditional screen production. This has become an increasingly important part of their shared professional identity.
Recent reporting places the family in Ibstock, Leicestershire, where the couple continue to balance home life with demanding creative careers. The Times reports that Graham and Walters run Matriarch together and live with their children. The same interview highlights his view that being successful professionally does not mean allowing work to take over every part of family life.
Movies and Major Film Roles
The actor’s film career covers crime stories, historical dramas, fantasy adventures, biographical films, superhero productions and family entertainment. His appearance in Snatch helped establish him with mainstream audiences, while Gangs of New York gave him an opportunity to work within a large historical production. His later movies include Rocketman, The Irishman, Boiling Point, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Matilda: The Musical, Young Woman and the Sea and Venom: The Last Dance. His role as Andy Jones in Boiling Point became particularly notable because the film’s single-take approach placed enormous pressure on the performers. TV Dramas and Peaky Blinders
Television has been one of the strongest parts of his career, with credits including This Is England, Boardwalk Empire, Taboo, The Virtues, Save Me, Line of Duty, Little Boy Blue, Time, The North Water, Help, Peaky Blinders, A Thousand Blows and Adolescence. These productions have allowed him to develop characters over longer stories and demonstrate a particularly strong ability to handle serious British drama.
His role as Al Capone in Boardwalk Empire required him to move away from his natural Liverpool voice and adopt an American accent. He also returned to the character of Combo for the This Is England television sequels. Other notable television performances include DS John Corbett in Line of Duty, alongside roles in Time, Help and Little Boy Blue. His television career has therefore covered crime, historical, social and contemporary drama.
His Peaky Blinders connection began in the sixth season, when he appeared as Hayden Stagg. He returned for Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, where Netflix describes Stagg as a former adversary who becomes a trusted member of the Peaky Blinders clan. The 2026 film features Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby and continues the story after the original television series.
Net Worth, Career and Latest Projects

Adolescence was especially significant because he acted in the series while also serving as a co-writer and executive producer. That combination demonstrates how his professional role has developed over time.
His latest work shows that the momentum has continued into 2026. He has returned as Hayden Stagg in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, while A Thousand Blows, Bunker and Nocturne are also part of his recent or upcoming screen work.
