Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has heaped praise on teammate Gio Reyna, insisting the American has the potential to become one of the world’s best.

The 17-year-old only made his senior debut in January but has already established himself as a core part of Lucien Favre’s squad. He made his first Bundesliga start in Saturday’s 2-0 win over RB Leipzig, bagging his first assist for Haaland’s opening goal.

Speaking to bundesliga.com after the game, Haaland confessed he has high expectations of Reyna, alongside whom he made his debut for the club.

“I called him ‘the American dream’ before,” Haaland said. “He’s 17 years old, and what he’s doing on the pitch today is amazing. He has a huge future in front of him.”

The son of Claudio Reyna, Gio has now made 17 appearances for Dortmund‘s first team, including appearances in both the Bundesliga and Champions League, and he has featured in all but two of the team’s last 17 league games.

His debut made him the youngest American to ever feature in the Bundesliga and the fifth-youngest debutant in Dortmund history.

Reyna had to wait for his first start as an illness kept him out of the 2-0 defeat to Mainz 05, but Reyna added that he was delighted to get the victory and ensure Dortmund finish second in the league table.

“It was my first start, which I was really happy with,” Reyna said. “It was a big three points to secure second place, so we’re all really happy.”

Bayern Munich have already been confirmed as Bundesliga champions, but Dortmund’s victory took them to 69 points and ensured they can no longer be caught by third-placed Leipzig.

Dortmund will finish the season with a meeting with Hoffenheim, who will travel to Signal Iduna Park on Saturday in search of three points to try and climb up to sixth in the standings.
